What is Mussike?

Mussike is a web-based tool for creating and understanding chord progressions. Whether you're just starting to learn music theory or already composing and need a quick place to try out ideas, Mussike is designed to help.

Do I need to know music theory to use it?

No. You can explore ready-made chord progressions without knowing what the numbers or symbols mean. Mussike lets you hear the music first and learn the theory afterward, if you want to.

How do I create my first chord progression?

Open the Progression Calculator. Choose a key or a starting style. Listen to the suggested progressions and pick the one you like. Send it to the Composer to continue developing your idea.

Do I need to create an account?

Does it work on mobile devices?

Yes. The website is fully responsive, but the Composer/DAW is more comfortable to use on larger screens due to the number of controls available.

Why do some chord progressions sound so good?

It has to do with the relationships between tension and resolution within a musical scale. Mussike presents these relationships visually so you can recognize them by ear, not just through theory.

What are scale degrees?

You can filter progressions by key, genre, or the mood you're looking for. Every result can be previewed before you use it.

What's the difference between scales and modes?

A scale is a collection of notes. A mode is the same collection of notes starting from a different note, which changes its overall character (brighter, darker, etc.) even though the notes themselves remain the same.

Do I need to memorize music theory to use Mussike?

No. Music theory is available if you want to dive deeper, but you can continue using Mussike simply by trusting your ears.

What is a chord progression?

A chord progression is a sequence of chords that repeats throughout a song and gives it its harmonic identity—for example, the famous I–V–vi–IV progression found in hundreds of pop songs.

How do I search for chord progressions?

You can filter by key, genre, or the mood you're looking for in your song. Every progression can be previewed before you use it.

What does the notation next to each progression mean?

Roman numerals (I, IV, V, vi, etc.) represent the scale degree on which each chord is built, rather than a specific note. This allows the same progression to work in any key.

Can I change the key of a progression I've already chosen?

Yes. Every progression can be transposed to another key without changing its harmonic structure.

Can I save a progression for later?

I can't hear any audio when playing a progression.

Make sure your browser and system volume aren't muted, and that you've interacted with the page at least once. Some browsers block audio playback until the first user interaction.

The Composer looks broken or cut off on my screen.

Your screen may be too small to display all of the Composer's controls comfortably. We recommend using a tablet or desktop computer for the best experience.

A progression won't load or takes too long.

This may be a temporary connection issue. If the problem persists, contact us through the Contact page and let us know which progression you were trying to open.

What should I do if I find a bug or something isn't working correctly?
